
Description
This course is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to enter and work in confined spaces in resources and infrastructure industries. It includes planning and preparing for entry, work and exiting confined spaces including working in accordance with an issued permit, Standby duties, gas monitoring and the issuing of permits.
The course covers the following topics:
- Legislation, standards and codes of practice
- Assessing, entering, working and exiting confined spaces
- Standby duties
- Signage
- Lock, tag out and isolation procedures
- Purging and ventilation
- Procedures, permits and risk assessment
- Equipment used in or near confined spaces
- Hazard analysis and controls
- Procedures for atmospheric monitoring
- Understanding and use of gas monitoring equipment
- Maintenance of gas monitoring equipment
- Use of ropes and knots

Upon successful completion of the course requirements, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for:

- RIIRIS201D - Conduct local risk control
- MSMPER200 - Work in accordance with an issued permit
- MSMPER202 - Observe permit work

Audience
This course is suitable for those persons who are working in operational roles:
- Undertaking work in confined spaces
- Working under the authority of an issued permit
- Conducting the safety observer role (standby)
- Conducting a variety of activities in workplace environments in which hazards exist or specific procedures need to be followed and monitored to protect the safety of personnel and the integrity of plant or process
- Required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace and interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation
